Oppenheimer (rented)
#1
Turns out certain physicists DID get invited to those sorts of parties!

I had no idea J Robert O got around.

It was neat that they talked about Lawrence starting the rad lab at Berkeley. We moved to California when my dad got his PhD so he could work on the cyclotron there.

Mostly a pretty well done story with good performances by Cullen, Downey Jr, and Blunt. Rami Malik has a minor, but important part. Before the third act, I thought he wasn't going to have any lines at all which seemed weird. Huey from The Boys is in the Los Alamos scenes and he doesn't have any lines at all...

Spoiler(?)
Nolan's editing style had some unnecessary fast cuts for effect that were a bit conspicuous. Also, there was a scene where O is staring into a modern art piece, the camera zooming in slowly on the piece, then zooming in slowly on Cullen's face, then back to the painting, then back to the face...it reminded me of something...

Steno question:

When you type on the keypad on the machine, shouldn't the paper advance periodically?

My gut reaction was to say there shouldn't be any paper. The I remembered this is a period piece from the 1940s. I'll let the expert way in when she appears.

I'm waiting for the price to come down on the rental before I do the rental. I do want to see this to complete the Barbenheimer.
As a matter of fact, my anger does keep me warm

You do think about Barbie while watching this and wonder about those that did the double feature, the order, and their reaction at the end of it all...

PS: Billie Eilish's "What was I made for" with its serious tone probably would have worked in either movie...

That was a bit of all right. I think Nolan's style worked really well as he jumped up and down the timeline. One of the things elided nicely was showing a great man without actually showing why he was a great man. What did he do? He headed up the atomic bomb project! How? Why? Because he owned land in Los Alamos? But that's a minor quibble. I don't think Nolan could explain Oppenheimer's input if they had monthly series that ran for years. I really enjoyed the picture. Every current male actor you have ever heard of is in this film and they do a great job. The film certainly doesn't pass the Bechtel test. Or the diversity in hiring test.

It was fun to see Berkeley. And the atom smasher they show seems identical to the one that is on display outside the Lawrence Livermore Museum up on top of the hill behind Berkeley.
