Yokai! Yay!

This is beautifully actualized with some fresh animation style - it’s like heightened stop motion animation. It’s a charming take on the yokai world, the fables of my childhood. I’m amused that daruma is a yokai. The vegetables, umbrellas, and lanterns are spot on. I’m watching it in English because George Takei voices the Tengu Sensei and that’s really working.

Only 4 eps about a half hour each. I’ll blow through these quickly.

E2: ok that went a direction I wasn’t anticipating. It’s almost Shamayalan. The cgi animation is stunningly beautiful and the story has a childlike innocence.

E3 Okay I see where this is going. Not so novel but the style of the animation has won me over. An the message is appropriate to yokai legends.

One more ep which I'll save until tomorrow.

And done.

That was great. Totally loved it, but I wish I had watched it as one 2 hour binge. It works better as a 2 hour movie in 4 chapters than 4 separate eps. It had so many elements I love - gorgeous animation, yokai, a father/daughter tale, a good message in the end - there was a definite Totoro vibe and I fully predicted how the Disney death would resolve. It's very family friendly.

Not really D00M recommended unless you're really into yokai or animation.
