Not much to say about this one. A good solid Westerner with Mifune and Bronson aged 50 and in top mature form, while Delon (and Ursula Andress) are 35 and gorgeous. The three male leads are so charismatic on screen in tough and deadly ways, and Andress is a femme fatale in her own right (and gets to undress, but only in peekaboo style).
It's hard to make swords and guns balance out in a movie like this, but the script does it very well. I did wonder about a couple things -- how Mifune kept preparing what looked like sushi when they camped out. And at one point, when Andress asks where they're headed, Bronson points and says, "A day's ride over those snowy mountains." And those mountains looked a week or two away, at least.
Yeah, DM, the ending isn't very satisfactory. It sort of short-changes Mifune. Still, as a whole, it's a nice twist on the Western and could have been so much worse.
Oh. Swordfights! Or at least Mifune's swords and knives against all else.
