Do you like depression? This is the show for you. Kate Winslett plays Mare, the titular lead, a detective in the small Pennsylvania town. She seems miserable. The people around her seem miserable, but better when Mare isn't around. Although Mare is the town hero for helping her high school team win the state championship twenty-five years ago. It's telling that everyone in Mare's family gets along better with Mare's ex than with her. So much so, they are all going to her ex's engagement party rather than going with her to celebrate her 25th anniversary of historic game.
Every scene is sad. Every character is sad. There are teen mother's fighting with their baby daddy's new girlfriend. The teen mom has an alcoholic father. Mare is upbraided by her boss for not solving a year old missing persons case.Mare has a grandson but there is no mention of the boys parents but there is a hint at the end they are dead. At the end of the episode, finally, there is another dead girl.
Not a lot of levity.

Ep2 was much more involving now that everyone is actively involved in finding the killer. It was all still pretty depressing in Easttown but at least everyone has something to do. The father of one of the accused harassing Detective Mare was the most horrifying bit. Lots of wonkiness.
WandaVision Factor: 1 It's good to see Pietro Maximoff landed on his feet.

We made to Ep4. tQ is on board, still with reservations. So much twisting and turning. And never ask if the lives of the residents of Easttown can get worse. They can. It's also about the main characters consistently making bad decisions. Enjoying the show in that open a vein sort of way.

Ep5 Mare of Easttown still has depression on speed dial but remains very engrossing as we are reaching the endgame of the series. I was afraid this was going to be the last episode because they solved one of the biggest mysteries, in the most dramatic ways possible.
They also did something the series has never done and was completely unexpected: The show made me laugh out loud. The laughter was probably over exaggerated because it was so unexpected. If I were to just tell you what happened, you probably wouldn't see the humor. But after 5 hours downer town, it was so cathartic. Of course, right after that, things went back immediately into the toilet. Never move to Easttown. People there have problems.

We had to put the last two episodes on hold while the Dowager Empress was in residence. tQ and i were going to watch one before watching some Giants-Cubs baseball but we got so engrossed, tQ demanded we see the final episode immediately.
I was completely off on who did it. And it did feel a little bit like a cheat. There was also a strange scene that was completely a Red Herring designed to make you believe in the wrong killer. But it was still emotionally charged right up until the end. And it was a journey from terrible darkness to a less terrible darkness. Actually, everyone at the end of the series was in a much better place than they were in the beginning. It seemed a bit saccharine.
But overall a good series. Kate Winslett did a great job and should be mentioned at Emmy time.
