You might recognize the name as the author of the Thursday next series of books.
It's a very interesting novel. It's set in our very distant future where society's structure is based on what color you can perceive. In the middle of this system is Edward Russert, a boy who can only see red. He's also very curious which isn't looked at favoribly in this society. He's sentenced to go to East Carmine because of a certain lack of humility and his need to change the rules about queuing.
Along the way he meets Jane, a gray. Sees the murder of a purple who is not really a purple. He also gets eaten by a tree. Actually, the book starts with him in the tree but that's not the tree that eats him in the middle.
The book is a mystery with the main question, "What the hell is going on" It's a good read but kind of complex and isn't like anything I've read in a while. It was very surreal sort of world building. It makes me want to go back and read more of the Thursday Next series. Be forewarned, this is the first book of the series.
