Uprising (2024)
#1
I don't know what took me so long to get to this one. It's a period swordswinger by Park Chan-wook, the director of the Vengeance trilogy and Oldboy, just in case you forgot. This film starts out bad ass and just gets better and better as it goes.

It's the tale of a master and a slave during the Joseon period and the Imjin war. A slave rebellion 'uprises' as Japanese troops advance on Korea.

It's a swordfightextravaganza! So many good sword fights from long complex ones (remember the Oldboy hallway fight? Still a classic) to soaring bird's eye shots (crows are a major theme) to lots of lopping off limbs and decaps (very sanguineous - not for the faint at heart but then neither was the Vengeance trilogy).

It's got a twisted plot and it's a bit challenging to keep up with who is who at first, but as characters die off or get mutilated, it gets easier.

Park delivers like always. This is a barrage of brutal gut punches, so visceral, not as psychologically disturbing as many of his films but still harsh (so many decapitations).

Totally D00M recommended. For anyone into sword fights (looking at PPFY & the cfs) this is a must watch.
