Howard Lovecraft and the Undersea Kingdom (2017)
#1
A Lovecraft animated film ... for kids! It’s based on a comic and done in the cheap cgi animation style of so many direct to dvd kids films. But it does know Lovecraft

This is part 2 of a trilogy. I didn’t realize that at first but I couldn’t find the first one, just this and the third one, on Kanopy. .

Little Howard is plagued by nightmares but he has a friend, the king of a magical kingdom in another dimension who can visit him via astral projection. He calls him Spot, but it’s actually Cthulhu. Srsly. A boy and his Cthulhu.

His mom, possessed, takes Howard to visit his dad in Arkham whose been driven mad after working on a journal that comprises a third of the Necronomicon. Howard falls prey to a spell that is turning him into a fish. They must visit other planes to retrieve the other two journals whilst being hunted by monsters from other dimensions.

It’s packed with Lovecraft Easter eggs, and a rather dark tale but the child like animation makes it family oriented. Spot is cute and helpful. Howard is a bobble head with goth mascaraed eyes. Voice cast includes Mark Hamill, Christopher Plummer and Ron Perlman, plus a lot of people with the same surname as the director.

I enjoyed it for it’s indescribable quirkiness but felt that it wouldn’t make much sense if you don’t know Lovecraft. I’ll probably watch the third film someday. It’s only a little over an hour. I kept imagining how the sameness plot would play out if done like an adult horror film.

No sword fights but plenty of tentacles. There’s tentacles in almost every scene whether it be from the entangling demons or Spot’s face. It was enough tentacles to make up for the a sense of swords.

Recommended for DOOMLovecraftians, and even then, you’ll have to be in just the right mood to enjoy this.
