The Music Room (Indian 1958) by Satyajit Ray
#1
A landowner, once wealthy and influential, refuses to accept that he has lost his profitable lands to erosion, and he sells the family jewels and all else to continue entertaining the neighboring elite with performances by top musicians in his music room.

Needless to say, this does not end well.

Despite being very much one note (no one really changes; it's a straight-out morality tale), the film is mesmerizing in how it's shot and in the musical performances.  (Note: The film is notable for being the first time that music is presented as central to the plot, rather than used as a sidebar or intermission to the storytelling.)

There are no big dance numbers.  In fact, the musical performances are without dancing, except for the final one.  Then a lone woman does a very Indian and difficult dance that would have us all puking our guts out.
