Rocketman (2019)
#1
Taron Egarton (of Kingsman Fame) stars in this story of Elton John from his beginnings to his sobriety in the mid 1980s.

What a good film! It all comes down to structure and this one is structured really well. Rather than just a straight up bio-doc of Elton John they do sort of a jukebox musical version of his life with a lot or reimagining of his songs. It had some great dance numbers. It was really lively. And it was unbelievably sad to see the circumstances in which he was brought up. In many ways it reminded of Moulin Rouge with how they reinterpreted the songs and used the songs to help tell the story.

I think the people that did Bohemian Rhapsody should see Rocketman and then go back and redo Rhapsody along these lines. I think Rocketman had much more emotional impact than Rhapsody.

I enjoyed this. It had fantasy sequences intruding into real life, rather like Across the Universe. And it looked great. Not much depth to the characters except for Elton and Bernie, but they are the stars.

I know, I know.  We liked it too.  It was an interesting contrast to Bohemian Rhapsody, a far better film, and captured the spirit of the music well.  Even made me rethink some of his lyricism.  However, like BR, I had issues of believability, like was it really that simple to write all those classics?  The music sequences were solid, especially Saturday Night's Alright for Fighting, which was done in three complicated one-ers.  I get your Moulin Rouge take, but really it's Bollywood.  There's even a solid nod to that in SNAfF.  MR was also Bollywood derived.  You should really tune into some Bollywood there, G.  All of you should (except for cf, who's already there with me).

Seen him.  http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomFor...0#pid21300

Wish I had seen him in his prime.  Or before he got sober.  Like Steven Tyler, he was better when he was a trainwreck.
