I craved something by Ringo Lam with his passing, and this he co-directed with Tsui Hark. I remembered it as an uneven film with a solid finale, and was surprised how well it held up. The twin Jackie effects are okay and he’s surprisingly effective acting the double roles with himself, and of course, the stunts and explosions are real which is thrilling to see now because we just don’t see as many of chosen anymore in the cgi-era. The twin comic next timing is absurd yet decent. And the finale fight is slow to warm but takes off as soon as the get to the auto test zone. Jackie’s timing and agility are so impressive and when you think over the stunts, so death defying. It suffers from from that period of HK cinema - Maggie Cheung’s ballad and dopey clunky bits, but not too painful in retrospect. Now I can recognize most of the director cameos - Lau Kar Leung, Wong Jing, et al. But really, it’s all about that last 20 mins of action.
