The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova

The first bad sign was the book separated and the first thirty pages or so fell out as a unit.

I was hoping for a good scary read. The story revolves around the search for the actual Dracula. The premise is that Dracula actually existed and was still around today. All you had to do to find him was check the historical record to find the clues to his whereabouts.

It started off auspiciously enough with a young girl worried about her father. It seems when the father was a young man at Harvard, a book was placed in his carrel whose only imprint of Vlad's Crest of a Dragon. This leads her father to begin a quest to find Dracula. Her Father's professor was also interested in Dracula and her recieved a similar book to spur his researches. But immediately after this confession by the professor, the professor vanishes. Clues to his disappearance point to Dracula.

So far, so good. The story flashes back and forth from the professor's quest to find Dracula, to the father's quest to find Dracula and the missing professor and then to the girls quest to find her father who goes missing as well. It's all very complicated, but it hangs together as the story moves from Istanbul to Budapest to Bulgaria with stops in England and France along the way.

Unfortunately, that's all they do. Is go from place to place and look at documents that tell the story of Dracula and how he eluded the Sultan after Dracula's demise. But there's not a lot of horror or scare going on. Granted there is the creepy Librarian who is becoming a Vampire who chases them but his appearances are few and far between.

The big question that haunts the first half of the book, Where is the Girl's mother in all of this, is eventually answered but the reason why she is gone is lame.

The final climactic battle happens in one line. Bang. Dracula dead.

I was a little dissapointed. The language and the trip to Istanbul partially made up for it.
So much for the flickr badge idea. Dammit
