I haven't seen any of the series (well, maybe the very first episode, but that was very long ago). Luther is a gritty detective that skirts the law I favor of justice. he's very Batman like...in this one, he's getting close to a serial murder (played by Alan Sorkin), so he leaks Luther's secrets to the press and Luther ends up in prison and the serial murderer can continue scheming, except that Luther escapes and while trying to stay ahead of the police that are trying to recapture him, he's also trying to help them solve the case and prevent the psycho from killing too many people.
It's a bit unbelievable, and I think sorkin is over-acting, but Idris Elba is still good. I think he just got knighted. Rumors were that he was in the running for the next 007 awhile back. From this and other work he's done, I think he could have done that really well.
