Oy to the Vey. But at least it has Captain Marvel.
Not just Capt Marvel, some DC superheroes and Reacher!
This franchise has gotten so ridiculously bloated - it’s managed to do what the MCU did after 30+ films in only a dozen films. And this is a payout - everybody comes back. It’s a big franchise so that’s a lot of actors.
And it’s as physics defying as ever. Super cars. The car chases are painfully and unapologetically absurd, but that’s where its charm lies (plus some amazing cgi-booster cinematography). It occurred to me that watching this with Greg and taking a shot every time he whined about something not making sense or anally pointing out some logic flaw would make a brutal drinking game. I’m not sure I could survive the first half hour of that even back when I was in my drinking prime. But like a superhero movie, you just gotta let that go. Why does every car flip through the air when it crashes or is blown up? That’s just how the F&F world works.
I was entertained by its extreme silliness and macho braggadocio. Note that I’m suffering from a travel cold after Mexico, so I needed something brainless to watch so this was perfect. And I think I’ve seen most all of the F&F films, but I couldn’t keep up with all the callbacks. Charlize was good and she has a great cat fight with Michelle Rodriguez. Momoa makes a weak villain, especially compared to Charlize in the previous installments. He hams it up but it just comes off as hammy.
This is part 1 of the alleged conclusion so the cliffhanger is extremely silly. However the post credit scene was good (as if we didn’t have enough callbacks already).
Not D00M recommended. It would be like watching the Deathly Hallows part 1 without having seen any of the previous flicks. It wouldn’t make a lick of sense… not that it does anyway. It’s just about preposterous car action.
