I understand that Daniel Day Lewis came out of retirement for this one. I’m not sure why. It was beautifully shot and well acted, but didn’t strike me as particularly interesting.
DDL plays a dress maker in late 50s England. He’s got quite a few idiosyncrasies and early in the film his estranged GF makes a fuss about the state of their relationship and DDL’s sister, who seems to manage all the business related things sends her off. Later, on a short retreat to the country, he spies a gawky waitress and invites her for dinner, then brings him back to his place, but only to use as a model for something he’s working on.
This sets the tone for the rest of the film which is about their dysfunctional relationship. He seems to have no social skills and one wonders why she stays. There’s a bit of an unexpected (to me) plot twist and an unexpected and odd ending.
Strange...
