A State of Mind
#1
It's a documentary about a North Korean rhythmic gymnast preparing to perform in a Mass Games, which is this crazy synchronized event where hundreds of performers do crazy things en masse. It's all for Kim Il Jong, on some national holiday, and Kim never shows. But it's a great show - simply outrageous in magnitude. The doc makers over-harp on the commie subjugation of it all. Mass Games are just a way to control the people, blah, blah, blah, never mind everyone seems pretty happy, even the gymnast girl who trains in freezing weather, outdoors, on cement. The architecture and feel of N. Korea resounds with the same commie architecture as PRC, strikingly so, with dashes of Korea culture dropped here and there. I would have loved just to see the Mass Games, from beginning to end, which the filmmakers shot very well, but only used highlights as the finale.
