How could it? That film is a masterpiece. This is more like a continuation of Chow's Soccerverse, but a much lesser film. And that's ok. I laughed. Several times. Instead of a zero2hero tale, this is about sisterhood. I liked the two leads. Zhang Xiaofei reminds me a lot of a young Michelle Yeoh. Dilraba Dilmurat has that exotic Uyghur blood rizz. I'd like to see more from both actors. It was good to see Carina Lau again. It's years after the events of Shaolin Soccer and the Emei women's team is already qualified as the underdogs of the finals. Chow's Mou Le Tau humor is toned down, except for the soccer matches, which are all good fun. Crazy Kung Fu soccer fights. That's what this is about. Those absurd eye candy physics that lie somewhere between wuxia and Looney Tunes are as over the top as the original, all in good fun. It's not a very complex story, but there's some good gags. I went in with low expectations and was pleasantly surprised at how much I enjoyed the parkyourbrainoutside qualities of the matches. I really liked the blind bonesetter. She made me laugh the most. Her homage to the 'why? Why? WHY?' scene in Fist of Fury got me. Funny for those that see the Easter egg. Same goes for the rainbow lollipop. Jimmy O Yang has a surprising deadpan cameo. There's a complaint from the Koreans about how their team is portrayed IRL, but the Japanese, Indian, and Australian teams are also portrayed negatively but not in too much of a culturalist way, and their not whining. I hope Chow continues to produce Soccerverse movies. I wanna see Wudang Soccer, Kunlun Soccer, let's see all the clans represented. When I went to get my ticket, all of the seats in the center of the theater were sold. I was in the second row which was a tad close for a movie with subtitles. But there were only maybe two dozen of us there in person. Perhaps those rumors about China buying up seats to inflate box office results are true. The audience was almost all Chinese. And they laughed a lot too. I'll D00M recommend this as a free screener whenever it gets there, as long as you abandon any expectations the original may have given you. |
