That Guy’s 60th gsthering - thatguy - 10-19-2025

KB was there…the rest of you suck…I don’t care if Boston is on the other side of the continent.

Fun was had…I made a fool of myself doing open mic shenanegans. the guitar player and bass player from spot 1019 were there and played a few spot songs and I even joined them on Chocobox and made a dog’s breakfast of it.

(Skip to the 7m20s mark: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MtyBpBj3a2I&t=7m20s)

I played one of their songs solo after and they gave a thumbs up, so yay! Richard von Busack (former film critic from the SJ Metro and spot 1019 fan) also played a few songs on ukulele.

Coffee Zombie Collective did an acoustic set with lots of energy after…All in all, a fun party.

Doom recommended. Next one should be ~2035

I totally confess to the suckage.

But Lorde is hawtter than tg. That’s DM’s excuse.

Congrats on completing a cycle of sixty (it’s a Chinese astrology thang - you only get one).

I also confess to suckage as I thought it was next weekend (I've been running a week behind all month)

I didn't realize it was your birthday. I came empty handed. I'm joining in the suckage.

I used to know Richard von Busack! I was briefly in a band with him and Andy Average and another guy whose name I can't remember. I wasn't that into it and bailed. If he was mad about it, he must be over it now. I was feeling really down on playing then and actually sold all my gear. Was he the guy with the red mohawk and Hawaiian shirt? Or someone who came after I left? If that was him I didn't recognize him, but it has been thirty years.

I didn't realize it was going to be Gsthering

You brought me a book about WW1 Air War! The guy with the mohawk is my friend Jerry from SJSU. RvB was a different portly person wearing a hawaiian-style print shirt, but it was covered in Japanese demon faces.

He come down from El Cerrito with the Spot 1019 guys, got up and played 3 songs solo on ukulele during the open mic set.

Does a D00M Gsthering of 2 qualify as a gathering? What constitutes a quorum?

Or is it just another example of D00M suckage?

He says he remembers you and the "other guy" in that band was Broos Campbell. He says he's sorry they got too infantile for you :-)

BC nor Broos were there. Apparently KB was in a band with Broos

I was souring on the whole band thing and frustrated with my playing. (I was too lazy to realize that the key to improving my playing was practicing scales, intervals and arpeggios.)

They were perhaps a wee bit infantile in their song choices, but all nice guys. Richard wrote great film reviews. Bruce did a hilarious booklet where he put obscene captions with Family Circus comics. And Andy Average (The Pope of San Jose) was quite a character all around.

TG, if you went to the Works gallery that night when Social Club played, Andy and Bruce read their poetry. And Phil Tiger did performance art.

Wasn't works a gallery on First St? Not the LaundryWorks, right? I don't think I was at that gig. I certainly don't recall any of the things you describe, but that really doesn't mean anything these days...

You may be thinking of the ICA, which was on 1st next to where Earl Scheib was. Works has been a bunch of places. At that point it was in a house on Auzerais ave about where the Discovery museum is. Then it was on 3rd, just North of Santa Clara in a building that had been an auto repair shop. Then somewhere else, I forget where, then on Almaden by the Convention center, and now on 2nd where Zanotto's used to be. There may be one more location I missed in there.
