Grave of the Fireflies (1988) - Drunk Monk - 09-08-2025
This is one of those classic animes that is often cited as one of the greatest and it’s been my queue forever. It’s about to WWII orphans in Japan struggling to survive. Well, no. They did at the beginning and we follow the ghost of the elder brother as he retraces the steps of his downward spiral after an air raid destroys his home and kills his mom. His dad is in the Navy and isnt returning his mail. He’s left to care for his younger sister.
It’s a downer from start to finish. It’s well done, a poignantly told tale, but I had to watch some stand up comedy after to pull me out of the wallowing. I’m just not into downer films right now what with everything going on. If I need a downer, I just read the news.
D00M recommeded if you’re an anime fan and haven't seen it - it is a must see anime. But if not, spare yourself the bum out.
