RIP James Lovell - thatguy - 08-08-2025 He was the command module pilot of Apollo 8 which was the first mission to leave Earth’s orbit and orbit the moon. He and crew were the first to see the dark side of the moon. This was around Christmas and is the mission that they read from the Book of Genesis. It’s easy to remember that this was the first lunar orbiting mission because the mission patch had a large figure 8 with the earth inside one circle and the moon inside the other. Later, he commanded Apollo 13, and we all no what happened there…so, he went all the way to the moon twice, but never got to set foot on it. Poor guy. —tg |
