Bruce’s Deadly Fingers (1976) - Drunk Monk - 04-15-2024
I’m scheduled to interview Bruce Le tomorrow so I checked in with this - his first film as a Bruce clone. This is mighty 70s Brucesploitation at its finest. White turtlenecks, bell bottom jeans and platform shoes. Bruce plays Bruce Wong, a student of Bruce Lee trying to master Bruce’s Kung Fu fingers. There’s a secret manual that he and a gang of scalawags are after. It’s an excuse for a lot of fights.
The cast is remarkable. Lo Lieh is the villain. Chiu Chi Ling does a long Hung Gar demo before he’s stabbed in the back like usual. From Bruce Lee’s films are Nora Miao, Bolo Yueng, Fung Ging-man, Ho Ali-Jen and probably a few more that I’ve already forgotten. Lee has an opening credit, but only appears a few overused still photos.
Some tracks from Dark Side of the Moon are spliced in several times. Gotta poach some tunes - it’s the Hong Kong way.
Le isn’t bad. He emulates Lee’s postures okay and is clearly skilled beyond that. He’s got a chi lord physique, not nearly as wiry as Lee but who is? His face doesn’t look at all like Lee but the rice bowl haircut and signature Bruce dark glasses makes it a lot more tolerable.
There’s gratuitous boobs. There’s a torture scene where a gangster dangles a wiggling lizard snakey thing over a bound nekkid prostitute to teach her a lesson. It’s almost implied that he sticks it alive up her hoo haa. There’s also a gang murder where someone is held down on a pool table and a villain takes his pool cue and knocks the 8 ball into his victim’s mouth.
Not particularly D00M recommended.

A young CCL back when he was lean and buff, playing a non-goofball role. He does a prolonged form scene, followed by a bit of dialog. Then in a later scene, he gets shanked in the back.

I am so glad that this was the flick I chose to review. It came up a lot and now I must rethink it.
SPOILER ALERT Le kills Lo Lieh by popping his eyeball out using a technique Le demonstrated and discussed at the screener END SPOILER
