Visitors from the Galaxy (1981) - Drunk Monk - 03-06-2024
Watched on a total lark. It just called to me. Now I understand why.
The main character is a lanky sci-fi writer, a caucasian dude with a mop of hair, a beard and mustache. He faintly reminds me of cranefly in his youth. That's probably not fair, but I'm told I remind people of so many Asian characters (the latest is Fire Lord Roku from the Netflix Avatar) but I'm just going to roll with it and say the main character is cf because it made this movie far more entertaining for me.
A struggling wannabe sci-fi writer (cf) imagines three aliens from Arkana galaxy. Cf writes while wearing a space helmet for inspiration. Everyone keeps interupting him with mundan problems. One of his friends convinces him that his story needs a monster and cf suggests a toy monster. Then the aliens appear for real. Or perhaps it's a total psychotic break for cf. The aliens are gold and shoot laser beams from their eyes. Cf is captivated because he wants to finish his novel about them, so he stalks them. He goes to a psychiatrist and confesses that his mom died early so his dad spontaneously grew breasts to breats feed him. Then it gets weird.
The toy monster is the best, more H.R. Puff-n-stuff than kaiju. It's a slow moving film, set at a Czech 80s pace, but whenever my interest started to wain, something bizarre would happen that would bring me right back to imagining a cf psychotic break from the inside.
It's a Czech film, and I haven't seen much Czech cinema, especially sci-fi from the 80s.
Not particulary D00M recommended, except for the cfs. cf himself might disagree, and I am taking liberties, but sometimes you gotta do that to improve the entertainment value.
