Mississippi Burning (1988) - Greg - 01-14-2024

I saw this on TCM as part of their HBO/MAX tie in.

Gene Hackman and Willem Dafoe head to Mississippi in search of three dead poll workers, one of whom is black. Everybody and there brother is in this cast. The only sizable female lead is played by Frances McDorman who looked just like Alyssa Milano. It was very odd. The weirdest person to spot was Tobin Bell who stars in the Saw movies. It was also odd that Brad Dourif went from this film to the Chucky/Child's Play movies.

It's kind of the perfect time to see this movie and to realize very little has changed. There is talk of the dangers of race mixing. There is plenty of antisemitism  as well as racism. Mississippi was a beacon of racial purity according to the leader of the KKK, played by Ned Ryerson from Groundhog Day. I heard so many echoes of the kind of divisive dialogue that the former guy spews out every day in this film.

It was quite the change of a pace.
