Remember the really sad segment of Pixar's Up that told the grumpy old man's backstory. Imagine if they made that into a full length movie starring Tom Hanks as the curmudgeonly elder.

You know all the beats already. There were a few nice surprises. The neighbors were interesting. It did tie together nicely at the end.
And it has a scruffy street cat.
