Mongolian Ping Pong (2005) by Ning Hao - cranefly - 02-10-2023 A Mongolian boy fetches water from a stream and finds a ping pong ball. He and others try to figure out what it is while engaging in childhood shenanigans. You know, dealing with bullies, stealing the dad's beer, hiding the grandma's knitting needles, etc. When they help a guy get reception on a TV by holding an antenna aloft, they see or hear just enough to learn it's a ping pong ball, and that it is the national ball. Feeling guilty for having the national ball, they try to return it to a policeman. But he has no interest in it. Two kids fight over the ball. A wise elder cuts it in half and gives half to each. If I haven't spoiled this already with my blather, here's my favorite bit. The eldest daughter is about to head off to school. The concerned mother asks, "Do the teachers beat you?" The daughjter says, "No, they're very nice. They treat us very well." The mother is heard to mutter to herself, "How does that work?" Exactly! Some bits of ethnographic interest, but really, there's much better out there. |
