Books were written without the storylines that I really cared about so I lost interest. It was also concerning that the author sadly died before concluding the series. And yet, I'll probably tune in.

Álvaro Morte is in this. He plays The Professor in Money Heist. So I'm all in.

Not impressed but still in for the Professor.

Well, that was a grabber, wasn’t it?

RE: The Wheel of Time - Drunk Monk - 10-08-2021

I don’t know anything about this series. Never read it. Never even heard about it until now. Looks a lot like a lot of other shows. I’ll watch until the Professor appears and then decide if I need to continue.

Standard fantasy tropes, a series of books gone on too long; the author died before completing the...10?15? 25? volume series. The author that the estate chose to finish it (Brandon Sanderson) got a U-Haul truck, a 20-footer, stacked floor to ceiling with boxes of notes from the original author (Robert Jordan). I stopped reading after few volumes.

I guess the show is now available.. I'll put it in the queue.

Not yet. Nov 19.

Never mind then.

E1 wasn't bad. It's pretty standard, like you say. A dark lord is coming. One of a foursome of 20-somethings may be the chosen one. They need to figure out who the chosen one is and succeed in some quest to defeat the dark lord. The dark lord has a horde of magic monsters.

There's a medieval village that gets raided by monster minotaurs. The fight scene, including swords and magic, goes on for a long time. It's sanguineous, and too dark to see the action well. The minotaurs (called something else here but I don't remember) are chasing the 20-somethings too.

Rosamund plays the sorceress Moiraine, and she's too talented of an actress for this. With all the special effects, those overwhelm her refined facial control. I like her henchstud with the sword slung over his shoulder. Yep. Swords. So sword fights. Henchstud chops up a lot of minotaurs.

There's something about listening to the wind so it's windy. Shot in the mountains near Prague, it's very scenic. That's where this excels. The fantasy world is gorgeous. Nice panoramas, decent sets, serviceable special effects. It's okay. Prime spent some on the production.

I'll watch a few more. Prime dropped the first three, and then it shifts to weekly doses until the series finishes - Season 1 is only 8 eps. I think it was around an hour long. Felt like that at least and I'm not about to look up the running time right now.

No Professor yet. I'm in until he appears at least.

Trollocs. The Minotaurs are called Trollocs. Minotaurs is much better.

RE: The Wheel of Time - Greg - 11-22-2021

Saw Eps 1 & 2. As noted before, I've read the first 7 or 8 books of the series. I gave up because the delay in book releases and my growing dissatisfaction with the story telling caused me to abandon it. There were so many characters that I would read a book and the character I most cared would barely make an appearance.

So, I'm familiar with this world. For instance, Morraine's henchman is called a Warder, which they did reference in the show. And that familiarity might be breeding some contempt. I don't think the filmmakers are doing a very good job bringing the story to life. Or maybe it just wasn't a very good story to begin with? It seemed like the story took forever to get going. And in the books there were three people from which to choose the Chosen One, now we get four. That kind of threw me. I did like the battle. Finally, some action. But it did last a long time and was very repetitive. Although that one death was pretty shocking. I don't remember that from the book.

Ep 2 slows down again. Lots of running through the forest. Every time we do extended sequences in the forest, all I can think is the filmmakers are saving money by not building a set. The White Cloaks are fun, but there leader is very cartoon evil. Whatever you do don't go into the bad city, so naturally the go to the bad city.

It all seems pretty dull at this point

I prefer Henchstud to Warder, although in retrospect I wish I had said Henchhunk.

Having not read the story, I'm fine with it so far...at least for ep 1.

One more thought - it's very diverse, almost painfully so in that CW sort of way. Are the books diverse? Sometimes that's hard to tell. Like I always thought Samwise Gamgee should've been black, or at least Indian.

RE: The Wheel of Time - Greg - 11-22-2021

Sad to say, being a white guy, I pictured them all as white. Plus, you would think a small village hidden way up in the mountains wouldn't show a lot of diversity.

But color blind casting is the thing to do.

RE: The Wheel of Time - Greg - 11-23-2021

S01Ep03 Morraine continues to be sick. We find out what happened to Nynaeve. Matt and Rand find a town and lusty serving girl. Perrin and Egween wander around and find the Tuatara. Pieces of the overall story continue to be doled out. Lots of ground to lay. Lots of wandering around in the beautiful landscape. There is always one scene that makes up for the slow bits and this episode has it. I might be more inclined to watch after this episode, but only slightly. The show still drags.

RE: The Wheel of Time - The Queen - 11-28-2021

Henchstud is an excellent descriptor.

RE: The Wheel of Time - Greg - 11-29-2021

I think the recipe for this show is 40 minutes of exposition followed by 10 minutes of mayhem. And then a cliff hanger. Rand and Matt and the Glee man find a farm house. Egwene and Perrin continue with the Tuatha. Henchstud, Morraine, and Nynaeve deal with the false dragon.

It does help to have read the books in several occasions. I remember all the different clans of Aes Sedai had various colors. I know the problem with the dagger Matt carries. In the books, there were only three chosen ones but they've boosted that to five. It seems like we met the false dragon very early. I guess they need to get this show on the road.
