The Glass Castle (2017) - Drunk Monk - 08-18-2021

A film by the director of Shang-Chi

Brie Larson is the daughter of alcoholic asshole Woody Harrelson and flighty painter Naomi Watts. Based on a memoir, the story flips back and forth between Brie’s childhood trauma (another actress obvs) and her adult self trying to reconcile her meager upbringing. Great performances by all. I forget what a fine actor Brie is and this part of perfect for Woody.

In the end, I didn’t buy into the dysfunctionality of it all. Brie and her sibs should’ve been more broken. There’s a flailing attempt at redemption at the end but it’s too little, too late.

Photos of the real family are in the credits.

Director Cretton weaves a decent story cinematically. He draws a lot from the actors, especially the children. It’s just so different than an MCU flick.

No sword fights. Not DOOM recommended
