Godzilla Singular Point - Drunk Monk - 06-28-2021

A new anime from Toho. 8 eps I think, each under 30 mins. I’m 2 deep.

So far, so good. It’s an intriguing retelling melding forgotten science and folklore. A small company run by an eccentric yet brilliant engineer is building Jet Jaguar - a defense mech. There’s an old base with a secret and a creepy haunted mansion. The engineer has three assistants, a hacker hero, a buff dude who went by ‘barbells’ and a goth hawty. There’s a cute research assistant and a disenchanted young dude at the base. There’s also a lot of helpful AI icons in everyone’s laptops or smart phones.

So far, Rodan has been introduced and it is animated superbly with enhanced cgi - Rodan is a more colorful pterodactyl with nasty rows of teeth in its massive bill and there’s a flock of them.

Eager to see big G. Go Go Gojira!

E3 rips a page from Hitchcock’s Birds, only instead of gulls, they’re Rodans. It kinda works. I like the way Rodan is depicted, sorta red pterodactyl like with rows of teeth. The change in animation to cgi increases their menace. Still enjoying this - it seems to be going somewhere.

E4&5: lots of technobabble about the archetype molecule and the red dust covering the flocks of Rodans. They’re digging deep into Toho kaiju lore with Anguirus and Manda. Still no big G tho and that’s starting to upset me. They are referencing a biotech company connected to the archetype molecule in India called appropriately SHIVA.

There’s a strange focus on eating. People are always eating. Ramen mostly.

The kaiju are really cool. Fast forward to the kaiju scenes.

Where am I now? E8 I think? Godzilla finally shows as a quadruped but then quickly explodes into red dust, wiping out all the rodans. But I think he’s just gone into chrysalis stage. The technobabble and metaphysics are getting way too talky. Just show the damn kaiju already. We don’t care about the why that much. We just wanna see kaiju destructive mayhem.

I thought the last Ep I saw tonight was the finale, but no. I miscounted. I’m ready to bail but it’s just like 1 or 2 more eps so I might as well see it through. It’s disappointing. Not due to the kaiju. The kaiju are cool. There’s just so much talky talky in between quick kaiju moments that it’s tiresome.

E9 Godzilla is finally in his full upright glory. He has a more crocodilesque head, more oranguatnish arms and breathes blue circles. It’s kinda cool. But the technobabble babbles on about singlular points, orthogonal weapons and the catastrophe. Struggled through e10 thinking it was the end but no. It’s a 13 Ep series. I may bail. I may just nibble at it when I have 24 mins before bedtime. The kaiju scenes are cool. The context is laborious.

Halfway thru 11 now. The story is so cumbersome and I’m not following it well. Jet Jaguar has rebooted into an infant but kills Rodans sanguineously with her kaiju-Horn spear. There’s banter about a super calculator that sees the future, red dust catastrophe, and of course, the single point. I kinda tune out until the kaiju come. Godzilla is hardly in this.

So close to the end. There better be a major kaiju payout in the finale.

Finished it. Disappointing. Didn’t quite understand what the deal was. The Disney deaths needed to be real deaths. The cute AI dog entering the mainframe of the time machine computer in a tron-esque world with a boat like the Minnow with a fat hole in the side made no sense. The orthogonal whatchamacallit bomb was a let down.

The final manifestation of Godzilla was cool but not enough. Bottom line - this needs more Godzilla. A lot more.

Not DOOM recommended.
