The Nevers (series) - thatguy - 04-11-2021
Watched ep. 1 tonight. An event occurs in late 1800’s London...ff 3 years and some, mostly women, have been affected giving them special powers. One is running an “orphanage” and is bringing as many of these women under one roof. The first episode does a lot of exposition, introducing the cast of characters and potential villains, tho it’s not clear yet where it’s going. Steampunk gadgetry, ladies fighting in their knickers. Writing was better than I expected tho this feels like X-men, or Heroes, or Umbrella Academy territory. Nick Frost is good as the Beggar King.

I have seen it. I have enjoyed the first episode. I concur that Nick Frost is good as the Beggar King. I want to see more of him.
There were a lot of entertaining scenes. The first episode was all about world building with some interesting scenes thrown in. The battle lines are being drawn. It seems if you go over one street you can see the cast of the Irregulars filming, but The Nevers seems to be the better show.
Joss Whedon is all over the credits. He wrote, directed and executive produced the first episode and those are the first credits you see when the episode wraps.

Boy, this is a fun show. Lots of stuff going on. At this point it's very hard to see which side everyone is on. And since it is Joss Whedon, no one is safe.
And Nick Frost is huge. I love the character he plays, the Beggar King, but I worry about his health.
Some really fun fight scenes. There is a deeply disturbing bullet wound scene. I am sad there are only six episodes.

Ep4 seemed to be a bit off. It didn't have the same sparkle and whimsy that the first three episodes have. I hate to say it might have been because Joss Whedon wasn't at the helm. But I can let him go. I hope going forward the new show runner can find her way back on track.

Ep5 was good. The effort is on to try to save Malia, the serial killer. As well as dig down to find the Gullanthi. A lot of new things were thrown at us in the episode. And it only really focuses on the rescue of Malady and the hunt for the Gullanthi. But the rescue of Malady was tight. We also got to see more of Nick Frost as the Beggar King. All the machinations were in play in this episode.
The last episode of the six airs next week. No word on if they will do the remaining six. I don't know what kind of reception this show has been getting. There hasn't been a lot of chatter about on the genre sites.

It doesn't look good from what I've seen. There's not a lot of talk about the show on the genre sites. They haven't even started production on the next six episodes for the second half of season 1. I'm thinking Sunday will be the last show.

Ep. 6 - what the hell happened?!?
Back story, front story, even more back story. So confused. Different writer, different director. Joss is just listed as the creator...Of the other episodes, his writing credit is on/off. Same for his director credit, although he directed ep 5.
The shift of tone in this one is a shock. It feels a bit dr who-ish.

I watched an "explainer" on youtube and am a little less peeved at the direction of the episode, but the presentation was difficult. The pacing was off. The first part was a ton of "new info" with a lot of jargon and no explanation. We actually quit and restarted the episode to make sure we were watching the right show. There are a lot of side characters and threads that didn't get any time in this finale, so it feels like it falls a little short...
The explainer said that with the "change of guard" and post-covid, it's expected that we won't see season 2 until 2023.

Okay. Initially, I had the same the what the fuck is going on reaction. I'm going to say the Queen was even more on board with WTF. But I realized it had to tie in somehow. And then they started to drop in clues. The biggest of which was the oldest soldier had a distinctive hand gesture I had seen before and she kept complaining about what time was she supposed to be in. And at the center of it all was the alien. Eventually there were a lot of tie-ins to the Victorian time. Once I had a handle on what was going on, i thought the show was very enjoyable, if a bit rushed in spots.
Lots of the review say it was a mess, but I don't think they fully got what was going in and how it all tied together. And episode six could very easily have been episode one if they show makers wanted to do a more linear and traditional form of storytelling. But I applaud what they did. They trusted in the intelligence of the audience to figure out what was going on. Which may or not be a mistake on their part.
But episode 6 was a fitting end to the season. It explained so much that you didn't know needed explaining and really rounded out the characters in some ways. I think the explanation of how Malady became Malady was really tragic. I also think they skipped a lot things for time which weakened the show, too.
All in all, I liked it. I hope they run another six episodes. I think this first season sets up the board and the pieces for the game and going forward we'll see how the game plays out.
