The official DOOM hat thread - Drunk Monk - 02-21-2021 I decided to take up our hat chat here because it was muddling discussion of a perfectly good sword fightin flick - http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomForum/showthread.php?tid=6124 I've copied all the discussion because I'm OCD that way. Okay, actually it's because my memory needs to be jogged by the previous posts. But y'all knew that. (02-21-2021, 08:50 AM)cranefly Wrote: For me, beyond the swordfights, it's all about the hats. Umbrella hats, lampshade hats, hats ridiculously small (to a westerner's eye) and hats with wing-like flourishes or scroll-like projections. You name it, and this movie has it -- in terms of hats. And they all signify important stuff about allegiance and rank and who knows what else. Not that I know any of it. So for me it's like a Monty Python skit about funny walks -- only this uses hats. Cultural appropriation maybe? (02-21-2021, 11:23 AM)Greg Wrote: While watching Unorthodox, I renewed my love for the big round furry hat the men wear. I keep wanted to break the mold but fear it would just accentuate my evil tong viilain look and I don’t need that right now. It looks weird because they're oversized to fit over the yarmulke, but a well-fitting one is a good look. Paul Simenon of The Clash used to wear one sometimes. A straw boater is a great hat too, but I think a bit theatrical. I worry about getting a sunburn on my balding head - I don't want to be one of those old men where the top of their head looks sort of like a ham - so I usually wear a straw fedora when I'm out walking. In colder weather I wear a knit cap. (02-21-2021, 08:57 PM)Drunk Monk Wrote: You can totally rock a straw fedora, KB. I could see that. I look like a simpleton or something. I dunno, man. With the recent increase in azn attacks, I'm figuring I better lay low when it comes to the evil tong villain thing. Wouldn't want to bloody my everyday carry, as much as it would please our dearly departed LB. Wait...Yetis get cold head? That's...well, there's a lot of places we could go with that. On those times I shaved my head, I can totally sympathize. Those times are when I started collecting hats. I learned quickly that if I'm going to shave, I should do it in spring. I'm getting shaggy again, so I've been pondering shaving again, but then I'd miss the excuse to visit Ms. Bailey for a trim. Maybe after I get my vax. It's not like anyone sees me now and I can tie my locks back for ZOOM meetings. I could totally see how baseball caps wouldn't work for you too, KB. I wish top hats would make a comeback. They're a pain in the ass to carry about, but I look good in them. At least I think I do and that's all that counts. RE: The official DOOM hat thread - thatguy - 02-22-2021 Aside from a couple of knit caps for the cold and a wide-brimmed straw hat I use in the sun, I have a fedora. Wearing it is very conspicuous and I feel a little foolish in it. I also have a brown leather rain fedora. I feel equally foolish and typically wet in it. I have a bowler that was my grandfather's (my mom's dad). It could use a little restoration on the ribbon and brim lining, but it has it's shape and fits my head...Somehow, I don't feel as conspicuous in it. I have a fez. Mike Roman bought them for us for Bashi Bazouks performances. We only played 3 times, very conspicuous, but I do like it as a keepsake...I have a porkpie hat (I think that's what it is). I got it from a boutique clothing store's warehouse clearance for $5. I think I look best in it and consider it my "party" hat. I also appreciate the value. If I wear it, I'm expecting to party. My most recent purchase is a leather cap. I'm not a fan of baseball caps. This has a more jazz or brit look. I'm trying to convince myself that this hat is not conspicuous and is acceptable and normal. --tg RE: The official DOOM hat thread - King Bob - 02-22-2021 The real reason DM extracted this thread was to make our posting counts go down and his go up. RE: The official DOOM hat thread - Greg - 02-22-2021 Bitter, table for one. RE: The official DOOM hat thread - Greg - 02-22-2021 No love for the Keffiyeh on this thread? RE: The official DOOM hat thread - King Bob - 02-22-2021 Mine seems to have disappeared at some point. A couple of moves ago I think. RE: The official DOOM hat thread - Greg - 02-22-2021 I still have a couple left from the trip to Israel in 2014. RE: The official DOOM hat thread - King Bob - 02-22-2021 For a while it was standard DM wear at outdoor Dead shows. My standard was a black boonie hat from Stevens Creek Surplus that served me well for a long time. At night I used a black Mao hat that I cut the brim off of. I still have that one but never wear it anymore. RE: The official DOOM hat thread - thatguy - 02-22-2021 Oh, somewhere, I still have the black Mao hat (with brim) that I used to wear in Number Nine. I forgot about that one. RE: The official DOOM hat thread - Drunk Monk - 02-22-2021 (02-22-2021, 10:19 AM)Greg Wrote: No love for the Keffiyeh on this thread? I lost the cord for a while. It got stuck in the sleeve of a sweatshirt in the wash. I was so happy to recover it. I have this blog post that I've been meaning to finish about bandanas and burnooses - it was part of my 'Love of Masks' rant that I started at the beginning of the pandemic. I was experimenting with writing within wordpress (bad idea) and it got stuck there. It grew into a huge abscess of a piece so I split it in two, posted the masking stuff and left the bandana/burnoose part waiting for some more polishing. Someday I should finish it, before the pandemic ends. I have time. RE: The official DOOM hat thread - thatguy - 02-22-2021 Can you write a blog post called "balaclavas and baklava"? Maybe it's a song title...I dunno. Definitely not a band name. --tg RE: The official DOOM hat thread - Drunk Monk - 02-22-2021 Too much sugar in baclavas for me. I just got my annual a1c draw today.
