Locked Down (2021) - Greg - 01-25-2021 Two estranged lovers forced to stay together because of the pandemic plan a heist of Harrod's Department Store. What could be funnier? Pretty much everything. My buddy Doug Liman of Mr. and Mrs. Smith directs Anne Hathaway and Chiewetal Ejiofor in this claustrophobic chat fest. Anne plays Linda the CEO of some sort of luxury brand. Chiewetal plays Paxton, the down on his luck delivery driver who just wants to break out of his cycle of failure. You know how some movies start way too late? This is one of those. The first thirty minutes of this film is Linda and Paxton whining about Lockdown and their lives. It takes forever to get to the bit about what they are going to do in this movie. It is all just backstory. There isn't any drama or tension in the film until Paxton accepts fake ID and agrees to pick up some luxury good from the three biggest department stores in London. Sure, you eke out little details of their backstory but it is all very cliched. And much like in Mr. and Mrs. Smith, the couple only regains their love for each other when they throw off the shackles of their humdrum lives and embrace their earlier wilder incarnations. If you are hoping for the clever bits of sophisticated heist movie, you can forget about that, too. It's all very clumsy and awkward. All very ugg. There were some good cameos including Ben Kingsley, Ben Stiller and Stephen Merchant. But you aren't going to see those cameos because you are going to see this film. |
