2020-2021 TV Season - Greg - 01-12-2021
September came and went without a new TV Season. That probably had a lot to do with the fact that Hollywood was on lockdown. I still follow the Local 44 Union Page (My old union) over on FB and lots of my brothers were out of work.
But some of the shows are trickling back onto the airwaves. Finally some of my shows have returned.
The Rookie
In light of the events over the last year, it was very problematic about how you have a hero cop show. Would people still watch it? I was curious to see how The Rookie would handle it. First off they had to Officer Nolan (Nathan Fillion) off the ledge from last season's Cliff Hanger. Which they did, but at the end of the day, Nolan is busted back for going rogue and not following official procedures to keep the community safe. In Ep 2, they send Nolan off for a week to be in charge of community policing. He tries to help but runs afoul of his neighbors because of his White Savior roll. Meanwhile another one of the cops decides her new pet project will be helping a homeless girl. The third rookie cops gets a new TO who is not secretly racist. The Racist TO is played by Superman, of all people, Brandon Routh.
It's all very preachy and melodramatic. But maybe if you are seeing from something other than male white privelage it's a welcome to change to see maybe a more realistic portrayal of cops as demonstrably flawed beings.

Hot tip: Skip Mr. Mayor. It's terrible. I hoped with Tina Fey writing and Ted Danson and Holly Hunt starring, it would have been better. Nope. Not even a little. There were faint echoes of 30 Rock but not enough. It was all just stupid.

See now, I don't know how to address this exactly. With streaming, I'm watching a lot of old shows:The Prisoner, Witcher, Masterpiece international series.
The only new ones have been The Mandalorian and The Expanse.
Does The Queen's Gambit and The History of Swear Words count here? I don't think so.

Yeah, it's becoming odd. I blame the dissolution of the networks and the rise of streaming for messing with the forum structure.

Is the medium the message? Does it really matter how you assimilated the material? I guess it does, because, as the forum tagline says: "You actually left your house and joined the masses at the Cineplex? Tell us about it." you may have a totally different experience than one looking at the same content on their phone.
Binge watching was notable when it was the entire Planet of the Apes series, or LoTR, or Star Wars on the big screen. Now, it's pretty common to spend the equivalent of a work-day with a show.

I continue to watch. I really enjoy Nathan Fillion. The rest of the show can be problematic but it is always good when he is on the screen.
The show continues to deal with all the issues that blew up over the summer. They are dealing with the MeToo movement and Racist Cops and BlackLivesMatter. Lots of messages every show. I wish there was a way for them to be more subtle about what they are doing but I don't that's possible. And from my position of white privilege it probably seems like a lecture but from other people's perspective it's probably not forceful enough.

I tried The Rookie but it always made me miss Stana Katic. It was always about her for me. That being said, I wasn't that into Absentia, so I should say it was the Katic/Fillion dynamic that worked, at least until they hooked up. Then the show sorta nosedived for me.
In the great DOOM movie (the sequel to the blockbuster DM & the Yeti) Fillion could play Scapino.

Somewhere on this forum, King Bob posted about the new Stanley Tucci show "Searching for Italy". I caught a bit of it yesterday. I saw the episode in Rome. It made me miss Rome and made me really hungry. If I ever find KB's post, I'll amend this there.

Superman and Lois move back to Smallville to raise their twin boys.
I watched the pilot and it never clicked for me. I especially don't like the twin boys, who are fraternal twins.
There is a big bad guy out there who battles Superman, but it's mostly the family drama of how Clark needs to spend more time at home to raise his kids, especially since the boys are developing Super Powers.
Whenever I think of Clark and Lois having sex, I always flashback to the book "Man of Steel, Woman of Kleenex" It was a humorous take on how Superman could never make love to Lois because his ejaculation might kill her.
Plus, there is a lot of teenage whining about how Clark doesn't understand his kids. I have had enough of that.

Likewise. I'm not planning to tune into this. Kung Fu drops on the CW soon. I'll have to tune into that. But I can only take so much CW.
