The Lady Vanishes (1938) - Drunk Monk - 07-22-2020
An early Hitchcock back when he was making British films, widely considered as one of the top 40 Brit films ever. It’s a train mystery, pre-WWI, a comedy thriller. A traveling woman’s newfound companion disappears on a train ride and everyone denies she ever existed. It doesn’t make that much sense if you step back and think about it - the conspiracy is ill defined - but it is a fascinating examination of nascent Alfred, already setting up tension with shots that would become his trademark.
No sword fights. A goofy fight scene with a magician and a silly shootout where everyone holds their pistols improperly, shoots way more rounds than they could possibly have in their guns, and can’t hit a thing. Only recommended for DOOM Hitchcock fans.
