Fast and Furious: Calvin and Hobbs - Greg - 12-08-2019

Or Hobbs and Shaw, my mind just keeps substituting those names.

Lots of booms. Lots of louds. Lots of waiting around with snappy dialogue until we get to the big set piece. Then we do some more snappy dialogue.

As noted by The Rock, this is the fourth time they have had to save the entire world, so it's got that going for him. Jason Statham plays the tough guy that he's been playing in every movie for the last decade. I really wish someone would give him a roll where he doesn't have to sneer so much.

There's a lot of references to family which I guess is a thing for the F&F franchise. The Rock has to come to terms with his estranged family. Statham gets to talk to his mom in jail and his sister is the main focal point of the movie, who he is also estranged with.

The Rock and Statham spend the whole film bickering until they learn they need to work together if they are going to defeat Idris Elba. The Cliche dumpster had backed up and was unloading the entire truck.

The stunts were fine. The action sequences were fine, if ludicrous. Knowing it's F&F, you wait for the big ridiculous car chases and there they were.

It was a good diversion for the morning if not the most challening of faire.

Yes, the Queen is out of town. How did you guess?

I forgot to mention that Kevin Hart pops in for ten minutes of wasted space. Ryan Reynolds also cameos with a throwback to his annoying self.

It was her sitonmyfacebook trail that gave it away first, so I've been expecting some reviews.  I so can't do the location thing.  The bounty hunters would pick me up.  Feckin womp rats.

I've been meaning to watch this.  I'll get around to it someday.  I've actually seen most of the F&F franchise.  I started when with F&F6 because Gina was in it and Ronda was in F&F7, so well within the KFM review zone.  Then I went back for some of the earlier ones for background and to check out the early Justin Lin one.  They offered the screener for this to us, but I couldn't make it.

F&Fs all absurd, but they have that formula, akin to the MCU except no one wear tights.  It's sexier, more macho and a helluva look dumber, but the action is spectacular and it's funny.

Even without seeing this, I can pretty much agree with Greg's review.  It's that formulaic.  Someday I'll watch this for real and confirm.

Someday was today.  And yeah, formulaic absurd action, a lot like the MCU.  A bit disappointing for Leitch as I expected better fight choreo.  Statham is the only one who could deliver more than half a dozen moves in one shot.  The rest was pretty simple stuff, even for the Rock.  Beyond Hart & Reynolds, Greg neglected to mention Helen Mirren's cameo, which was quite wasted, but at least it sets up a sequel.

Last year, only 2 Hollywood films made China's top 10; the rest were domestic.  Those two were this and Endgame.  China now has more theater screens than all of North America combined.  The U.S. still has a larger film market $11B to PRC's 9B, but that is the last bastion of Hollywood dominance.  It has everyone thinking about that crossover hit.  Cf was way ahead of the curve when he won that screenwriting contest a few years back.  I keep looking for elements of his screenplay to show up in some PRC film, but frankly, it's been hard to keep up lately.  Of their top 10, I've only seen Wandering Earth, which cf and I discussed ( http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomForum/showthread.php?tid=4955). I'm eager to see the rest, especially Nezha.

But back to H&S, yeah, kinda what Greg said.  I'm astounded that this franchise has come so far on it's silly premise but must salute it's originality for not being based on anything beyond all the cliches they can poach, and am eager for the next F&F.

I noticed that this was up for a Golden Globe in the Most Original Cliche category.

I'm tempted to watch at least one in this franchise.  Are there any car-chase or car-racing scenes?  I don't much care for those.  Never mind.  I can always fast forward through them, just watch the acting.

If you’re serious (and I know you’re not) the best two are Tokyo Drift or F5 & and 6. F5 directed by Lin and TD the ‘asian’ one. 6 stars Gina and features the most absurd finale cliche but it’s so absurd it’s entertaining (http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomForum/showthread.php?tid=2378&pid=17190#pid17190)
The 1st one had too man carpentry cliches.

I just want CF to know what he is getting into.

I didn't see a lot of Tay-Tay in that trailer. Are you feeling okay?

I think he knows.  Have you seen the films and trailers he posts?  F&F won't even phase him.  Plus he's a big fan of Gina & Ronda too, so we're good.

Um...well now that you mention it... like I said on our trailer thread...

Whatever floats your boat.

In retrospect (back to Hobbs & Shaw), the running jokes about GoT were really odd.  There were several.  What was up with that?

I was also very disappointed after they got all those traditional weapons out.  I thought that was going to set up some cool fights, but the big battle was a bit of a mess.  It did make me understand the Return of the Jedi in a way.  I never liked the Ewok ending but I get it now as sort of reaction against tech, quite ironic given the CGIness of both franchises.  Lucas originally want it to be a Wookie battle (Ewok is Wookie spelled sideways) but he didn't have the budget or the tech.  The franchise went back for it in Revenge of the Sith, but it was played out by then.

F&F: H&S is so thought provokin...  Tongue
