RIP Dr. John - King Bob - 06-06-2019

He did some great stuff, and would worth celebrating if he only did "Right Place, Wrong Time." His album Gumbo is worth seeking out; it has great versions of some older New Orleans songs like "Iko Iko," "Big Chief" and "Junko Partner." And according to the NY Times obituary, he was an Ivory Soap baby, and also wrote the theme songs for Blossom and Curious George.

I saw him once, but he seemed to be in poor health and wasn't that into it. He looked unhappy and played a short set. But that was easily 20 years ago, so he kept on going for quite a while.

I have a faint memory of seeing him at the Kaiser. Or maybe it was the Warfield. Maybe it was with Jerry or the Dead? Maybe it’s a false memory.

I shoulda taken better notes.

Notes like the one about Don?

Exactly

I saw him at the Catalyst in Santa Cruz. No memory of the opener. Was it with you DM?

He may also have played one of those "New Orleans by the Bay" shows, but I can't remember seeing him there. I think I missed on of those shows though.

I don’t remember the Catalyst show but those are pretty blurry if it was during my grad school years.

I was at most of the NOBtB shows at SLA but I don’t remember seeing the good doctor...maybe.

Turns out he opened for Jerry at Electic on the Eel. There were three of those and I’m still not exactly sure which one we attended or if I attended two. I’m pretty sure I didn’t attend all three.

I should’ve taken better notes. That’s my epitaph.
