Clan of the White Lotus (1980) - Drunk Monk - 03-03-2019 Ending today's Sunday Kung Fun Day on El Rey, one of my favs, so much so that I'm surprised I've not reviewed it here before. Lo Lieh as the White Lotus Abbot (essentially Bak Mei) who has the dopest flower-filled dragon-spout hot tub ever. Gordon Liu as the hero bent on revenge. Johnny Wang Lung Wei as the villainous second man-at-arms, like always. And one of my greatest Kung Fu Queen luvs, Kara Hui as Gordon's sister. She kicks ass. She always kicks ass. What's not to love about this film? The casual offhand way Lo dispenses with Gordon's early revenge attempts saying 'You've improved!' and then thrashing him soundly. The constant groin attacks from Gordon, including my fav technique where you lie on your back, scooting forward with your feet with finger jab to the soft and tenders as Lo retreats. Kara teaching Gordon her woman Kung Fu, and Gordon constantly balking because he doesn't want to grope her or strike her breasts. Gordon fending off two swordsmen while he is unarmed (I've always thought that it would be impossible to evade someone armed with a sword when you're unarmed, much more two - I think it was the Chun Li bun-and-ponytails hairdo that defeated them). Lo bares ass, and in one scene, as he leaps from his hot tub to escape ambush, something dangles - I've never slow-mo-ed that, nor will I, but it implies Lo was well endowed - for realz. Today's trilogy: The Magnificent Ruffians (1979) http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomForum/showthread.php?tid=4869 The Delightful Forest (1972) http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomForum/showthread.php?tid=4071 I RIDE WITH EL REY RE: Clan of the White Lotus (1980) - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 03-03-2019 Lo Lieh is one of the greatest screen villains ever. I saw an early SB film where he played a good guy and I was confused. RE: Clan of the White Lotus (1980) - Drunk Monk - 03-03-2019 It's those buggy eyes of his. Villainous. And he is the master of the villainous bwahahaha, best accompanied with his cocky beard stroking. He's also got amazing pole arm skills - give him a staff, spear, Kwan Dao, any long weapon - and he's unstoppable. He's really the best Bak Mei of them all. RE: Clan of the White Lotus (1980) - Drunk Monk - 09-23-2025 Watched this again with the YMAA staff - only one of them is a Kung Fu nerd enough to know any movies and the rest are painfully naive. No one else had seen this before. We turned it on as a lark. Someone said we should watch a Kung Fu movie and this came up on Amazon Prime first, so I endorsed it. It delighted everyone with its campiness and its awesome iron crotch (Greg - the biggest oversight in your doc is you overlook the iron crotch genre in Kung Fu films, which is massive). Kara is sooooo good in this, so agile and gorgeous. And Lo Lieh is the most condescending villain ever. Such Shaw Brothers goodness. Totally D00M recommended. |
