Mother of God: An Extraordinary Journey into the Uncharted Tributaries of the Western Amazon (2014) by Paul Rosolie

Paul Rosolie, a troubled (dyslexic) teenager from New Jersey hungry for adventure, travels down to the Madre de Dios region of Peru, one of the wildest regions near the start of the Amazon.  The experience transforms his life, and he has since commited himself to studying and protecting the Amazon.

He's almost insane in some of the things he does: drinking river water, going barefoot through the rainforest, making a two-week solo hike into uncharted regions, etc.  And yes, he has encounters with jaguars.

LC and I both read this book back in July and enjoyed it -- enough that on Christmas day we're scheduled to fly down to the Madre de Dios region for a 10-day stay.

I'm guessing Mr. Rosalie didn't read Into the Wild.

Have a great trip.
