The Sisters Brothers (2011) by Patrick deWitt - cranefly - 06-24-2018
Brilliant in so many ways. The first chapter alone -- and they are short chapters -- could be used to teach an entire course in characterization. Wonderful characters, all playing off of one another, all more or less a mix of good and bad. And it's gritty in a Cormac McCarthy way, only not so unrelentingly dark and despairing -- though close to it in spots. The dialog is loopy, clever, funny, and inspired.
There is a movie slated for release in 2018. I can see why. This is intensely visual, and seems almost impossible to translate badly to screen. Then again, we're talking about Hollywood. I wish Tarantino had been attached to the project. Not that I'm a lover of all things Tarantino, but the dialog is right up his alley, as is the violence. In lesser hands -- Jacques Audiard, who the fuck? -- I fear the worst.
