One Man, Two Guvnors starring James Corden - cranefly - 06-22-2016 What a strange concept: film a live performance of a play, then present the film in a theater as a live performance of the play. We watched this at the Century in Pacific Commons, Fremont. I really didn't know what to expect. Well, considering it's a British performance, and factoring in the sad state of my hearing (even with new hearing aids), I figured I'd have trouble understanding much of anything. And that was the reality in the early going, but so did the others I went with (they confessed afterwards). But then we seemed to adjust. Or maybe it was just that the play began to rely ever more on situation comedy and even slapstick -- but in a good way. All in all, a very impressive performance. James Corder is an absolute rarity. His comedic range is astonishing, and there were several other actors who complemented him beautifully. The play occasionally breaks the fourth wall, and in this particular performance it delivers some surprising and spontaneous humorous touches. Lots of laughs. A great weird outing, if you're up to something a bit off the beaten path. Note: It costs a little more than a movie. It's like our minds are one - Drunk Monk - 06-22-2016 I just watched James Cordon's late night show last night for the first time. I recently re-watched Into the Woods because it'll be T's high school play next year and thought I should check it out. It was okay. He's very talented. I'll watch more when he has good guests. That theater is right next to my office. Some good restaurants nearby. I keep thinking I'll take some long lunches and catch films there but I never do. The have decent deluxe nachos. All I knew of Corden before was some of the Carpool Karaoke bits on Youtube. into the woods to grandmother's house - Drunk Monk - 06-23-2016 (06-22-2016, 10:12 PM)lady_cranefly Wrote: I've wanted to see Into the Woods. How hard is that for you exactly? Honestly, you might be more entertained just by reading the DOOM review: http://www.brotherhoodofdoom.com/doomForum/showthread.php?tid=3286 Then again, next year, Mt Mad High School play. I'll let you know. You'll be impressed by the production value of the school plays here. It's better than most community theaters. |
