Big Chief Elizabeth; Love and Hate in Jamestown - King Bob - 05-30-2013 The former is a general-interest book by Giles Milton (author of The Riddle and the Knight which is also good) about the Roanoake colony, Walter Ralegh, Queen Elizabeth, and the Jamestown colony. It is sort of arranged around the story of Walter Ralegh, who was behind the colonization effort, and ends with his death. Pretty easy reading and quite good. Also gives a plausible solution to the missing Roanoake colonists. The latter is a more scholarly book by an David A. Price (it is footnoted) focusing on the Jamestown colony and focusing on John Smith. It is both shorter and more detailed than Milton's book, but does not deal with the Roanoake settlement except in passing. Price is a very good writer and I recommend it if you are interested. For a shorter treatment of this material you can also see the relevant section in Tony Horwitz' A Voyage Long and Strange. |
