D&D Revisited - El Dingo - 03-18-2013
So, you know DM's claim to fame is as an awesome Dungeons and Dragons dungeon master.
Last weekend a friend of mine asked me to help introduce his 10yo nephews to the game. I had lost all my books and accessories on eBay so I had to buy a new set of dice and relearn the basics.
Basic #1 - 10yo is too young for a slow, math-driven environment.
The kids gave it their all but I could tell the pace of the game was not keeping up with their metabolism. D&D is 90% cerebral. You immerse yourself into your character, your environment and a what-would-you-do adventure. Kids don't have enough experience to envision themselves in a tavern or castle. Oddly enough they were more intrigued by the math aspect of the game; initiative throws, attack chances and HP hits. They couldn't engage in dialogue with NPCs, envision the environment or patiently wait for each turn to complete. They also had problems with evaluating long-term ramifications of encounters.
I had a great time (through two 5-hour sessions) and see how the game can capture the imagination of a young person and adult.
DM - Let's do it again.

Nowadays there's cosplay and mmorpgs. Why bother with dodecahedron dice?
Actually, I like dodecahedron dice. I just like saying 'dodecahedron'. It's a great word.

The allure of rolling weird dice is what clinched the deal for me. I bought a set of dice from Dr. Comics and Mr. Games in Piedmont. Mottled black with green numbers. I was the envy of the kids and the coolest guy in the room.
