Julie & Julia - Drunk Monk - 07-24-2012

The final film by Nora Ephron and not to speak ill of the dead, but we're glad of it. This film is way too long - over two hours and for a foodie film, it didn't make me the least bit hungry. Meryl does her best impersonation of Dan Ackroyd's SNL impersonation of Julia - a clip of which appears in this film and is the best scene in it - if not spoiled by Ephron's overlaid cutesy dialog. What is it with Ephron's dialog? It's got this weird rom-com rhythm that is so distinctive. Amy Adams does her best impersonation of Meg Ryan. It's uncanny. Whatever happened to Ryan anyway? Was she eaten by hyenas? No sword fights. Not even close. Not by a long shot.

Instead of watching this film for two hours, I recommend that you just watch the SNL skit 40+ times. That's a masterpiece. Here it is - you can start now: http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/ ... ef/278767/

I found out what happened to Meg - Drunk Monk - 07-25-2012

Plastic surgery FAIL. Hyenas would have been a better fate.

So, DM.
Was this a DVD choice you made?
Just doesn't seem quite up your alley.
Or were the kitchen knives enough to entice you?
Inquiring minds yada-yada....

P.S. I've been staying very very quiet on this forum of late out of fear I might say some dumb-ass thing that'll get me tossed out of the Olympics. I know I have it in me, in spades. Then it occurred to me: I'm not competing this year. Well, duh-uh! Time to throw caution to the winds!

I confess that I am a fan of both Streep and Adams - Drunk Monk - 07-25-2012

But in answer to your question:

Oh HELL no!

Mrs. DM's picks for last night's viewing - Drunk Monk - 07-26-2012

As T is in London until Sunday, it's been netflixmania at Castle MacBeth. Last night, Mrs. Dm was the selector and the double-feature theme seems to have been Muslim terrorism in London beginning with the letter I. This is somewhat in he wake our venture into the British series MI-5 (aka Spooks) where almost every plot circled around dirty bombs. We tried to watch all the turning point episodes when main characters bit it.

Infidels
Moderately funny tale of a Muslim who discovers he is actually a Jew. It co-starred Kalinda, the character who really gets it done in The Good Wife.

Incendiary
Could have been retitled My meltdown with Marilyn because my family was blown up by terrorists. Young Obi-wan tries to help. We were hoping it would go somewhere, like some massive spy conspiracy, but it didn't. So we were very disappointed by it.

I came home from Kung Fu practice where I had to lead because our coach caught a cold from teaching the kids and S was watching Infidels. I came in during a hallucination scene and was hooked. Then I took a shower and S had started Incendiary. The frustrating thing was that I have a FOB Kung Fu flick that's been sitting in the queue since Conan. Maybe I'll get to it tonight...

Re: Julie & Julia - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 07-28-2012

I liked that "MI5" show.

Agreed! MI5 was pretty entertaining - Drunk Monk - 07-30-2012

It got silly now and again, but on the whole, it was cool because main characters would get killed a lot. The first few seasons were quite good. We watched quite a bit of it. No commercials on netflix streaming and they have the first 10 seasons available. It reminded me of 24 in some ways, especially around season 4 or 5 when they started getting heavy into cliffhangers.

Re: Julie & Julia - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 07-31-2012

I only saw the first 2 seasons on cable, but really enjoyed it. 10 seasons...? Wow!

The cast changes completely several times... - Drunk Monk - 07-31-2012

Everyone dies or gets shipped off and replaced except for the head of MI5, Harry Pearce. By the 3rd or 4th season, the bulk of the cast has already flipped. There's an 11th season, but that's not available on netflix stream.
