Dum Maaro Dum - Drunk Monk - 04-16-2012 R-rated Bollywood? Bring it. DMD had a slick Bollywood style, that's for sure. I confess, I was fairly entertained, more so than with the average Bollywood flick. The nice thing about longer running times is that you can be more leisurely about weaving your story arcs and developing characters, so it was all fleshed out well. It's about a bad cop, who lost his family, and his shot at redemption is to take down all the foreign drug lords invading Goa (a popular resort area). Lots of raves on the beach. I really want to go to a Bollywood rave on the beach. Everyone dances much better than at SF raves. Deepika Padukone did the climactic rave vid, although she's only in the film for this cameo (she was in Chandni Chowk, which is a great flick). Then again, most of the beach raves ended in police raids and killings. No sword fights. There were a lot of gun fights, some decent stuff, and some rather silly fisticuffs (why Bollywood can't choreograph fights while they can choreograph awesome dance numbers is beyond me). There was an attempt at a single-shot raid up-the-staircase fight that was spoiled by horrid choreography. There was a blowtorch fight (SPOILER: if you are corps-à-corps in a blowtorch fight, use the torch to cut a thick chain and drop a massive weight on your assailant). Was it R worthy? Oh yes, it was. SPOILER 2: The cop anti-hero tortures a fat perp by putting a condom dipped in pepper sauce over his pistol and sodomizes him, saying as the perp screams 'this is my favorite song'. There's a nice touch after when he casually tosses his victim an ice cube from up his drink to stuff up his ass. Dayum Bollywood - didn't know you had it in ya. |
