Boomerang by Michael Lewis - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 01-13-2012 Ever wonder why Iceland's government collapsed and Greek citizens rioted about their government. Well Boomerang is the book for you. Lewis takes four examples, Greece, Iceland, Ireland and Germany, and tells how the availability of cheap credit in the early 2000's destroyed the economies and future well being of thee of these countries. It is one thing to hazily know that these countries are in trouble, it's another to get concrete examples of how bad things are for these countries. Ireland's problems are particularly egregious. It was a good book for me to read to get a better understanding of the world wide debt crisis. Re: Boomerang by Michael Lewis - cranefly - 01-14-2012 Nonfiction? You're reading nonfiction? I recently had a conversation with several literate friends. The subject of nonfiction came up -- in particular, whether people in general read less fiction and more nonfiction as they get older. There may be a grain of truth in that, as I'm drawn more and more to nonfiction. And I'm seriously considering reading this. In some ways, it sounds like a murder mystery. Just who the hell is this serial killer of economies? And did he/she/they profit? Always looking for the villain... I'm not getting older - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 01-14-2012 But I am reading more non-fiction. I blame the Daily Show and it's slew of author interviews on very diverse subjects. Lewis also wrote 'Moneyball' and 'The Blind Side'. I might have to read those, too. I generally only read non-fiction - Drunk Monk - 01-16-2012 It's because I have to read so much fiction for work. Ouch! - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 01-16-2012 What are you trying to say? China scarred me for life - Drunk Monk - 01-16-2012 Someday, you should peruse my X-file. It's all the wacked out submissions I get, which includes several manifestos. I keep a file in case one actually is a psycho killer. I do this on the advice of the postmaster general, after someone sent us a package of instant cheese soup and a dirty hypodermic from an insane asylum in the UK. And that's not fiction. I couldn't make that up if I tried. Great - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 01-16-2012 Now, you tell me. From now, I'm strictly Erin Island. Re: Boomerang by Michael Lewis - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 01-17-2012 DM, I'm thinkin' you need a yearly "Best of" for your X-Files, or WTF Chronicles, the Huh? Papers, etc. that's a funny idea - Drunk Monk - 01-17-2012 maybe a DOOM only sort of thing. no need to encourage that lot. i'll start a thread the next time i get an interesting one. my X-file is two overflowing magazine boxes. need to start a new one soon. good time to start sharing it w/y'all. |
