The Year of Living Biblically by A. J. Jacobs - Drunk Monk - 11-20-2011

Great read. Jacobs weaves a wonderful tale, one that is critical, yet open-minded and respectful, and most importantly, well researched. He teases with the absurdities of the Bible - prohibitions on winking, eating fruit from trees under 4 years old, that sort of thing, to visit snake handlers, Falwell's church, Jerusalem... It's very funny and his epiphanies feel genuine, even for a self-proclaimed agnostic.

I read the Bible cover to cover. It's a read I recommend to everyone (except you can skip Numbers). As you might remember, I carried a pocket Bible for a spell. I loved to read it on BART, clad in my Oz oilskin trench, which made me look unapproachable (always a good posture on public transit - in JA patios, dem a'call it 'screwface'). Jacobs made me consider revisiting the Bible again. I don't think I've seriously engaged it since 6/6/6, and that was just rereading Revelations.

I heard him interviewed when the book came out and was really intrigued. I'll dig up a copy at Green Apple.
