Tangled - Drunk Monk - 11-29-2010
During our T-Day 2010 DOOM gathering, ED & I had a discussion of Disney princesses, Legend of the Guardians, how he got teary-eyed at Despicable Me and was Megamind really better? I decided not to engage the Disney Princess issue at any length because it was just pointless. ED isn't going to watch a DP flick just to further his point and I really wouldn't want him to do so. DPs, well, they've come along way, baby. They are liberated, empowered, not waiting around to be rescued.
That being said, Tangled's Rapunzel is a throw-back. She's a classic DP, only slightly empowered for 2010, almost a reaction to the very empowered Princess and the Frog, who was black and saved the prince, totally against type for a DP. Rapunzel is uber blonde, one might even say the blondest ever- what's more, she looks like the most sexualized DP, Ariel. Tangled follows the DP formula, DP meets prince, they have an adventure, they almost hook up, but then they don't because of the evil villains, DP feels betrayed but faith brings her back, then some one dies, but no, they don't die and they live happily ever after.
The 3D is good, not overwhelming, but enjoyable. The sidekicks are super funny - best part of the film. The villains are good. All around amusing for a DP flick.
The most notable thing about this film - it's perfectly set up to be converted to a Broadway musical. That's the mouse for you, always thinking about synergy, always a step ahead of the game.

Back to Tangled, the 'prince' (thief really) is named Eugene. But he changed his name to Flynn Rider because he didn't like Eugene. My kid and my mom thought that was hysterical. More on the 'Eu' name prefix on the Dawn Treader thread.

All I kept thinking as I watched the opening backstory was that Pixar would have done this a lot better in a quarter of the time. Let's just say I was pretty bored until Maximus the horse showed up. If it weren't for the horse, this film would have been a complete waste of time. The chameleon (Did the Chameleon have a name?) continues in a long line of Disney sidekicks and will be stocked as a plush toy in a store near you.
The songs were a bit disconcerting except for the one at The Snuggly Duckling. I'm thinking the entire film should have been set at the Snuggly Duckling. Those were the most entertainingly drawn characters and seemed to be having the best time. I think the bar was just down the road from the Thieves Bar in Shrek where Puss n Boots hangs out.
The film had a few laughs. The mother didn't die, which was odd for our blood thirsty Disney masters.
The most entertaining thing on the DVD was a quick trip through Disney's 50 animated features. The clips went by pretty quick and it was tough to guess all the names of the films as they showed the two second clips. I think I got about 35 of the 50.

I'll have to check out the 50 clips. However, since I could probably reel off most of them from memory, I wouldn't expect too much trouble. Still. I'm dead to all of you, so what the hell do I know?
I gotta go have a good cry now. And I loved Tangled. I don't know if George did or not. I'll see him tomorrow, but probably won't bother to ask him.

Easy there, Lazarus. Don't go all *crazy* wit the posting just cuz you're back from the dead. Please give Mr. Lucas an "attaboy!" for the Clone Wars cartoon and ask him to never, ever write or direct anything every again.
