Sherlock Holmes - Drunk Monk - 12-22-2009
Sherlock was a great romp. I've never been a big Downey fan, but he pulled it off nicely and launched another franchise. Now he can sit back and just pump out Sherlocks and Iron Mans until he retires. It's a toned-down Ritchie, more for a pop palette, but still satisfactory. Holmes & Watson are the ultimate buddy pair and the film is a total buddy film. Law is a tougher smarter Watson than usual and that totally works here. The action is engaging, some fun fight scenes (especially the first two), and the dialogue is quick and witty, overall an enjoyable experience. The film delivers on its promises very well. I was a big Holmes fan (the original books) back in late high school, early college. Read them all, front to back. It's a lot like the Bond saga, a great read, and very different from the movies. In that sense, this film is a lot like Casino Royale or Batman Begins, rebooting an iconic character by getting back to its roots (the books) and updating it along the edges. Good fun, this one.

What a terrible film. I'm wondering which one DM saw. I can't remember being this bored in a film. I recieved no connection with the characters. It seemed like Downey spent the whole film mumbling.
It did look great but then aren't computers wonderful. But I never felt engaged to the story. It just seemed like Holmes and Watson spent the film wandering around with Holmes trying to get Watson to join him on his adventures. This was a good subtext but it never changed. It was Holmes trying to get Watson to come with him. Watson refuses and then gets seduced into coming.
There was some bits about Watson's gambling problems, but that never paid off. There was one scene of Holmes using his super deductive reason skills but it was mumbled so I didn't really get his cool revelations. I did kind of like his reasoning about what he was going to do in a fight and then going and doing those things but I kept waiting for it to be wrong.
At the end of the movie, I just didn't care about these characters and this story.

It's started some sort of revitalization of bartitsu, which looks like the bastard child of Thibualt, Renn faire drop outs, kenpo and Italian fencing. Just think of what this can do for Victory. Heck I should post something on Victory's FB page.

I'm cutting it now. The big hold up will be a couple of plate shots from the beginning that won't be ready until I get back from China. However I'll have something rough I will be putting up privately youTube for people to review and comment on before I finish. It will be like a Screener!!!
