Stardust - Drunk Monk - 01-08-2008 Fantasy films rock today. The effects are so cool. And with writers like Neil Gaiman, you can't go wrong. This is very entertaining fantasy fare - light, humorous, enjoyable. De Niro steals the show, absolutely steals it with every scene he's in - it reminds me of his performance in Brazil. He knows he has a juicy part and he totally runs with it. Pfeiffer is a hag, then really hot, then slowly returns to haggish next. That's kind of weird. Alsa, for the days of Ladyhawke. Danes is well cast - why she's cute with that huge nose of hers, I'll never know, but she is. O'Toole's part is perfect for him, but short lived. It's a funny flick. Gaiman creates that sense of profound otherworldliness just across the wall. A delightful swordfight in the end. That's a sure way to appeal to me. Give me a decent final fight, and I'm pretty happy with the film. 2nded - scapino - 01-09-2008 Absoltutely right about DeNiro. Also loved the fallen brothers. Overall, not a great film, but good fun. Gaiman - thatguy - 01-09-2008 Loved the book Coraline. Not so thrilled with the movie MirrorMask. --tg Coraline - Haggis Killer - 01-09-2008 Coming soon as a stop motion film directed by Henry Selick. hold the phone, tg... - Drunk Monk - 01-17-2008 ...you didn't like mirrormask? what happened? did fatherhood sober you up? 3/4's good - Greg_phpbb3_import1 - 01-27-2008 It seemed to run out of steam about 3/4's of the way through. All of sudden, the film was let's all race to the wall because we can have a dramatic collisions story lines. Then it really doesn't happen. We all have to run to the witches lair, where they have an endless pointless battle with lots of cool things happening. Didn't you feel a little bad because it was so over the top? Hmmm? Be honest? I liked the fallen brothers. I liked that Tristan's ideal love was just using him to send him on his great adventure. For part of the film I thought it was Gwyneth Paltrow instead of Clare Danes, but something wasn't quite right about that. I also liked the goats. But who doesn't? I agree - King Bob - 02-13-2008 I also liked it. I particularly liked the flying ship; it reminded me of Burroughs' Mars books, once favorites of mine. And I agree about DeNiro. I think he's always better when not trying to be serious and live up to his legend. Nice cameo by Ricky Gervais too. |
