It’s been quite the year for whisky auctions, especially those featuring bottles of 60-year-old Macallan.
In May, a bottle of Macallan Valerio Adami 1926 sold in Hong Kong for just over $1 million, at the time setting a record for the world’s most expensive whisky. Last month, that record was broken by another bottle of the same whisky, which sold for $1.1 million.
Finally, on November 29, a bottle of 60-year-old Macallan sold at a Christie’s auction in London for £1,200,000 (roughly $1,528,800), smashing the world record for the third time this year.
The whisky, which Christie’s describes as an “ultra-rare elixir,” is presented in a one-of-a-kind bottle, painted by Irish artist Michael Dillon. The bottle’s illustration depicts the Easter Elchies House of The Macallan against the backdrop of the Scottish Highlands.
This year’s prior two record-breaking bottlings came from a collection of 24 numbered bottles, 12 of which artist Peter Blake decorated, with the other 12 designed by Italian artist Valerio Adami. All three contain the same Scotch, a 1926 Macallan single malt which spent 60 years maturing in ex-sherry casks.
“The sale represents a landmark moment in the whisky market,” Christie’s International Director of Wine Tim Triptree MW said in a press release.

It's not every day that a liquor company imitates a detergent manufacturer. But anyone who's bought a Tide pod for the laundry will recognize the origins of the so-called Scotch pod, "glassless cocktails" for drinkers who can't be bothered to pour.
"No ice. No stirrer. No glass. We're redefining how whisky can be enjoyed ... #noglassrequired," The Glenlivet tweeted as part of its "Capsule Collection" roll-out, timed with London's Cocktail Week.
People have been enjoying Scotch whisky for hundreds of years, usually in a glass and often on the rocks, of course.
Now, The Glenlivet boasts that it is changing the way the hard alcohol is consumed.
"A first of its kind for a spirit brand, the edible capsules are 23ml in size, fully biodegradable and provide the perfect flavour-explosion experience," read the Scottish brand's promotional materials. "Enjoying them is simple, the capsules are popped in the mouth for an instant burst of flavour, and the capsule is simply swallowed."
Judging from Twitter posts, some whisky-lovers, however, aren't so thrilled.
"Ummm, whisky cocktails are for sipping & savouring, not exploding in your mouth all in one go," wrote Susie Mac.
"Jello shots. You reinvented jello shots," tweeted Jodran Weissmann.
"Just put it in an IV bag. Let's get to the inevitable conclusion," writer Roxane Gay added.
The limited-production pods are being served as an amuse-bouche during London's celebration of cocktail innovations, which run through October 13.
That limited availability ought to keep most people from confusing them with laundry detergent.

Another winner this year was the Aberlour Abunadh. Another fave of mine that even though it is cask strength, it is smooooth.
