I don’t know if you got a chance to see a lot of rooftops, but I love me some Roman roofs. Crazy apartments and I want to live in all of them.

I’m in Stockholm now. Finally got a new visa stamp for a country I’m in less than I was in the Vatican. This is a tiny airport but I had a nice salmon sammich, so it’s all good. Oaktown in 11 hours...

Well I got one good sleep cycle in and am now tweakin with jet lag. And y'all know this is my place to tweak.
My final 10 hour flight was horrid. Norwegian Air offers no complimentary service. Charged me $6 for earphones and a half cup of crappy tea. I was in the seat in front of a horde of crying kicking babies and my vid screen wouldn't turn off or even dim. So no sleep. Then my iphone went wonky - still not getting service - so I couldn't call my mom for pick up from BART. Had to actually use a pay phone and the delay put her in traffic which freaked her out. I feel really bad about that. She's not that good a driver anymore.
Stacy & Tara are in Athens now. They say it's hot and like a 3rd world country now.
I should add that we went into one last church, even though we said the Basilica would be the final one. Some church was holding a free concerto - I didn't make note of which church - so we poked in to hear the organ. We only stayed for a few tunes. They put out a offerta basket, and I tossed in my change as I left, somewhat saddened that this mighty gorgeous ancient church (whatever it was) wasn't making as much as the street buskers playing Ed Sheeran tunes.
Now some airline movie reviews? Yes, I think so.

Well, I've been up since 2 or 3. I figured I might as well start telecommuting.
I went to Verve as soon as it opened for a cappuccino fix. it was good, but not as good as Italy. Then breakfast at Seabreeze, which was filling. Now I'm still telecommuting and listening to the UCSC reggae show, trying hard not to miss France and italy. It's a cool foggy morning here, quiet, no tourists.
At this point, I will say I loved Firenze the most. Paris and Roma blew me away with their art, architecture, cuisine and beauty, but there was something charming and less city-like that stole my heart. And of course, there was the Stibbert and Duomo. Getting up close and personal to that Duomo mural rocked me.
Thanks again for all the tips. Greg, I only skimmed all those books lightly, but that little pocket map was super helpful and I'll return them the next time we cross paths. Much appreciated!

I figured you would prefer the Hell mosaic in the Florence Baptistry over the Duomo fresco. Maybe that's just my preference for Gothic over Renaissance. Did you catch the memorial painting of Sir John Hawkwood, the English mercenary near the entrance to the Duomo? (There's a great book about him called The Devil's Broker.)
And I was surprised you didn't Instagram one of the Captives in the Accademia; I thought they would be to your taste.

Both hell depictions were really impressive. I think the whole Duomo experience added into my impression of it. Being up that high and so close to piece made the Duomo piece hit me like a hammer. But I did enjoy the Baptistry piece too, for sure. Couldn't really shoot either of them. The Baptistry was too far away for my little amateur point&shoot and the Duomo was behind grungy safety glass.
I did take some pix of the slaves. I'm not sure how they came out. I downloaded them this morning but I haven't really looked at them. Those slaves were awesome. I liked The Atlas best because his head is still trapped by the uncarved block.
I was being more obtuse with my gramming. I'm always that way there. I originally wanted my gram to be more personal and my fb more professional - but they both went their own direction despite my attempts to manipulate them. My more formal-ish pix will go up on facebook albums over the next few weeks. Stay tuned.

Look. I'm not saying I'm crazy. But the shots I took inside the Duomo in 2005 were poor so I made a special trip in 2017 to fix that.

That's an awesome pic. I'll have to revisit your fb album. Totally reasonable reason to return to Firenze. Any reason actually. I was really taken by the city. Like I said, it was my fav. I'd go back in a heartbeat.
I've been trying to talk the Man at Arms: Art of War makers to film next season at the Stibbert. It's not going to happen but I can dream.

My family went on to Athens and then to Zakynthos. They head to Corfu next. It's been boat and beach time, from what they tell me. They say it's more 3rd world and language is a significant barrier. And it's super hot. I'm not jealous. I'm happy for them. Not jealous at all.

When you go back to Verve, try a “Gibralter” (aka: “Cortado”). I think Verve uses too much milk in their caps. Their coffee is good, so why drown it?
