RE: Irish Whiskey - thatguy - 03-10-2020

I have a bottle of Scapa 16. Tasted a bunch at The Whisky Experience in Edinburgh and this was the one. I’ve had 2 or 3 bottles over the years and have really enjoy it. I’m down to the last dram, so I thought I’d look for another bottle and THEYVE STOPPED PRODUCING IT!!! I found a Scapa at some local chain wine store, but it doesn’t say the age anywhere on the bottle. The uninformed wine staff looked up the reviews of what they have in stock and it’s some < 3 year old blend. WTF.

Now I’m on the hunt. If, while looking for your favourite Irish whiskey, if you see me bottle by the Orkneys, please let me know.

here’s something to watch while you’re emptyin’ the bottle:

I'm drinkin low-end Irish now.

Still workin on that Jaymo Black Barrel Ppfy tossed out in my direction. It's down to about 2-3 fingers left, but I put another two bottles in its way. I picked up a bottle of Tullamore Dew when shopping for my mom because it was on sale and I'm being very frugal being out of work and all. I've also got a bottle of Gordon's vodka I found in my dad's liquor cabinet unopened that I tapped recently. It's the nitecap cache. Not about quality right now. It's about effectiveness.

I got a few top shelf bottles stashed away but I'm waiting for some celebratory occasion to crack into them.

Until that time, it's cheap liquor.

I gotz those unemployment blues...and Ima here to tellya bout 'em.

The Doc from JAH Med sent me a Redbreast sampler. He also offered to put us up at his stunning place in the redwoods of Arcata as refuge. We launched the Doc Lee & Gene’s Safety Meetings at JAH Med - a whiskey taste off at festivals. I can’t wait until we do it again.

RE: Irish Whiskey - Drunk Monk - 10-25-2020

After I polished off that Jaymo and Tullamore, I've still been on my job quest budget so been drinking bottom shelf Irish - got a bottle of Egans. Egads. Tastes a bit like fuel. I've got a few nice bottles stowed away unopened but my working nitecaps have been low end. There's an open bottle of Powers in the kitchen cabinet that Stacy likes for Irish coffees, and I've been nipping at that too, so when we made hot toddys a few days ago, it was spent. I had to replace that.

Powers changed their bottle and that confused me. I picked up some Gold Label but I was thrown by the new bottle and wound up buying some 3 Swallows too, just to be sure. I don't like the new bottles. They actually came out at the beginning of this year but it's been ages since I've been in a proper liquor store so I hadn't noticed until now. The old style was more traditional and you got those little bottleneck medals. I liked those. However, the new bottle was cheaper. Powers Gold Label is a good bite for my buck. It's cinnamon nutmeg spicy with an apple and pear cider overtone, but ultimately quite smooth. I once disdained Powers as being Ireland's JD, but I've totally come around, especially after a night with John Lane in Dublin. I've yet to spring for a bottle of that here. Someday, when I'm feeling solvant again...

RE: Irish Whiskey - Greg - 10-25-2020

I always figured Jameson as Ireland's JD. Powers, for the longest times, was the Whisky Ireland kept for itself as it wasn't exported.

RE: Irish Whiskey - Drunk Monk - 10-25-2020

You're right. But then, you do know Ireland a wee bit better than me.

Powers is to Dublin like JD green label is to TN.

RE: Irish Whiskey - Drunk Monk - 03-17-2021

Sláinte

So what’s your whiskey of choice on this St Paddy’s 2021?

For me, it’s Powers 3 Swallows with some Blarney Castle nite cheese & brown bread (companion, not soda but the whiskey is kicking in so I can’t tell...)

RE: Irish Whiskey - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 03-18-2021

I had sparkly water. I’ll have some Talisker later this evening.

Too late, bro. St Paddy’s is done for 2021.

Besides that’s a scotch.

You probably didn’t even wear green.

RE: Irish Whiskey - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 03-18-2021

Just cuz it's St. Paddie's Day it's no reason to drink bottom shelf. I'll save the vanilla fer baking and the Scotch fer drinkin'!

RE: Irish Whiskey - Drunk Monk - 03-18-2021

So disrespectful.

You don’t see me drinking JD on Burns night now, do ya?

RE: Irish Whiskey - Dr. Ivor Yeti - 03-18-2021

Why would anyone with an ounce of taste and a modicum of cash ever, EVER, drink JD? I’d rather drink Irish
